Who needs bingo? Not San Manuel Casino in Highland, CA. One of the largest bingo halls in North America has been phased out in favor of new slots games, restaurants and bars.
The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians have a long and rich history in Southern California. Officially established in 1894, the tribe diversified its revenue by building a 50,000 sqaure-foot bingo hall on their reservation in 1986. Eight years later, the property was expanded to include a 100,000 square foot casino. It has since grown into one of the largest gambling facilities in So-Cal, and the second largest bingo hall in North America.
Throughout the years, bingo has been the tribe’s primary source of gaming revenue. But times are changing, and so are the patrons who visit the property. The glaring truth is that Millennials play video games, not bingo. And with that hard fact in mind, the tribe made one very tough decision. They are phasing out their bingo hall in favor of new slot machines, card games, trendy restaurants and stylish bars.
New Slots Games Overtake Bingo Hall
The renovations began back in 2016, slowly transitioning to a 100% casino gaming property. The remainder of the 25,000 square-foot bingo hall that was once a staple of the San Manuel Casino is now completely gone. The casino now boasts over 900 new slot machines, 16 card tables, and other fashionable amenities, mostly of a consumable nature.

Since renovations began, the property has added a daquari and juice bar, plus a Mexican restaurant called George Lopez’s Chingon Kitchen, designed by the famous comedian himself. They’ve also expanded one of their most popular eateries, Rock & Brews. The rowdy rock’n’roll themed bar-food burger joint, founded by such notable names as Kiss band members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley (among others), hosts everything from music videos and rock images on their large screen wall-mounted TVs, to live tribute band concerts.
No More Bingo for San Manuel Casino
San Manuel Casino’s manager Loren Gill explicated the tribe’s desire to create a more energetic vibe. One that appeals to today’s younger gamblers, more so than the seniors that once contributed so much to their gaming revenue.
“We are out of the bingo business,” said Gill. “We are not here to be also-rans. We are here to be the best.”
The tribe’s ultimate goal is to become the dominate gambling destination in all of Southern California. To fulfill that goal, they’ve been funneling million of dollars into site renovations to create a more lively atmosphere. And they’re not done yet.
The next plan on the docket is to dole out another $550 million on the development of a resort style hotel. Adjacent to the casino, the hotel will feature 500 rooms, and should help San Manuel compete better with the other 60+ tribes who host gambling properties in California – many of which are also revamping and building new hotels, or expanding existing ones.
Will New Slot Machines Be Enough?
The addition of new slots games may not be enough to get younger gamblers in the doors. For the last few years, casino all over North America have struggled to attract the millennial generation. Much like slow, ineffectual game of bingo, they harvest little entertainment from games that require nothing more than the push of a button and a pair of crossed fingers.
