Disgusting NBA 2K20 Trailer Promotes Gambling In Game Rated For 3+ Year Olds PlayStation 4. It's a slot machine, one of the most addictive forms of gambling there is. You'd think they'd be on Reddit or even 4chan given the larger communities, but they pick here I guess.

2K Sports owns the basketball video game market with their NBA 2K, with little competition from the newly-revived EA’s NBA Live franchise. Well, 2K Sports latest trailer for NBA 2K20 featured a controversial MyTeam gambling slot machine where players spend virtual currency to roll for MyTeam rare cards.

The Pan European Game Information board, aka PEGI, addressed the matter with a statement on Reddit. The board had already gave NBA 2K20 a 3+ rating, which doesn’t coincide with the slot machines and wheel of fortune gambling activities shown in the trailer. Here is a part of the board’s statement.

The trailer includes imagery that is generally known from casinos (wheel of fortune, slot machines). Using this sort of mechanic to select an item, or character, or action by chance is not the same as teaching how to gamble for money in a casino. These differences currently prevent us from applying the gambling descriptor. But we are very aware that it may get too close for comfort for some people, and that is part of an internal discussion that PEGI is having for the moment. The games industry is evolving constantly (and rapidly in recent years). As a rating organisation, we need to ensure that these developments are reflected in our classification criteria. We do not base our decisions on the content of a single trailer, but we will properly assess how the rating system (and the video games industry in general) should address these concerns.

NBA 2K20 was released today, and it has taken a big step forward compared to its predecessor. However, it is not without its faults. One mechanic in particular has drawn controversy: The MyTEAM slot machines.
In the wake of the Loot Box controversy that started with EA’s Star Wars: Battlefront II it seems crazy that 2K have taken this path.

The concept of pay-to-win is something which has infuriated 2K fans for years. To compete at the top of the game, purchasing virtual currency was pretty much a necessity. So in order to try and nullify this as much as possible, 2K have introduced a new feature into their MyTEAM game mode: Casino slots.
To try and reward those who play the game, there is a new prize system in place, with prizes awarded for winning games, completing preset challenges and even for just logging into your account.
The issue? These mini-games strongly resemble that of an online casino. There’s a ball drop game, a spinning wheel and even a slot machine.

is at an all-time high, it is staggering to think that the team at 2K Sports thought this would be a good idea. Look at rivals EA Sports’ FIFA Ultimate Team completely as a result.

The trailer that started the whole controversy has since been deleted by the NBA 2K YouTube account, but with the micro-transactions from FIFA Ultimate Team becoming an absolute money-spinner for EA Our verdict?

With what I can only imagine is a high percentage under-18 fanbase, something needs to be done quickly in order for 2K to regain their credibility, and perhaps even more importantly avoid the wrath of lawmakers around the world.
